I work at home 24/7 and was wondering if anyone else did the same.

I love setting my own work schedule but there are also challenges.

I find that I have a harder time working alone and motivating myself and do better if someone else is around.

Anyone else have similar challenges?

Wendy

I'm with you! I work at home and have a terrible time with self-discipline. It was so much easier away - at an office. None of these house distractions ... wondering if I should redo the bathroom or clean the kitchen. Plus, I work better on a team. The suggestions in books, advice from time-guru's and a myriad of other resources haven't been successful.

I still am totally distracted by the house. The kids - nahhhh. But, the HOUSE!smiley

I work at home too,I'm a full-time care-taker for a "special needs" child, that I'm not related to.I work 24/7,he has a mother that lives here too,but the majority of the time,he's mine.Jayson has cancer and has to have someone watch him "up close and personal",every day,all day and night. That's my job and will be until he dies.I'm NOT hospice,I'm his village, his strength, his confidant and his window to the world outside of his home.
There are nights I cry myself to sleep, because I can't change his life for him,it's frustrating and I want to quit, but I can't.It's the hardest job that I've ever done.It DOES serve to make me more appreciative for all the blessings that God gave ME.The pay is unimportant to me.I just want my smiling face to be the first face he sees in the morning and the last he sees when it's his time to go to God.

I am going to start a new job in the next month that will be working from home for 4 hours a day. I like the idea of not having to commute but recognize that working from home will have it's own challenges. Any advice will be appreciated.

I've worked from home for the past 4+ years (for a company and now for myself) and it remains a challenge. I think flexibility is key and if you have children at home, you need to get them out of the house or get yourself out of the house. Too much of a distraction and the second your colleagues or clients hear children in the background, a degree of respect is lost.

Treat your at-home work time as though you were headed to an office with lots of co-workers, get dressed every day, schedule your work time (if its not scheduled for you) and when your day is done, it's done.

Flexibility!

I agree that sometimes working at home is hard to deal with in terms of professionalism. Like Sugarmom said, sometimes people can hear children in the background.

There are obviously benefits to either situations. Although I would probably prefer an office more, because I crave a social environment.

Love your avatar, Goombah. Everyone else, I encourage all of you to post your avatars! It will make it all the more fun.

I work from home, if you can call it that. I'm working on making it an actual job, not just a side thing. I'm an independent Scentsy Consultant.

The good thing is, I love my product and it sells itself. Now, I have to go from being quiet and shy to outgoing so I can get people to look at the product and make sales. Good luck to all of us!

If anyone is interested in seeing the product, let me know and I'll give you my website!

I've been a SAHM working at home since forever. Yes, it's tough to stay focused. I have always done that by beginning the day (after breakfast and coffee and exercise routine) getting dressed and makeup and hair as if I were going to the office---last day at the "real" office was the day my first-born arrived! So, getting dressed means I'm doing my job. Only diff is I don't leave home.So ingrained now that even on days when husband is out of town and I don't go out of the home office....I still get dressed for work! Keeps me honest....er, focused.

And list-making is the other tip that's always been a boost for me. See "How to get through the day" in another thread. List-making is a must for me, a writer, or I'd never get to writing on all the ideas that come into this ol' head.

Hey, say hello on my site....www.ilikeme.comsmiley

I work from home and have several things going on at once. I have my freelance writing which usually falls between 12 pm to 3 am since it requires thought and quiet. Also run my husbands office during the day. I have 2 little ones in school and 1 toddler at home. Scheduling phone time is the hardest thing so you need a quiet place in the house to talk our place seems to be the bathroom when otherwise un-occupied..LOL But wherever is best for you because being interupted by kids makes the other person crazy. Find a routine. The good thing about working from home is that you can do a load of laundry whenever you want so embrace that don't fight it. If the housework is calling set a timer for 15 minutes and do some when 15 minutes is up go back to work. Take lunch hour to play with kids its okay... that is why we SAHM stay at home. If you find all of that to distracting get n office and close the door when you go to work and teach everyone (including yourself) that when the dorr is closed you are at the "office " and cannot under any circumstances be interupted. Everyone has their own way of doing the SAHM thing sometimes it just takes awhile to figure out what works best for you, your lifestyle, and your family.smiley

I work from home and have two little girls. I love being home with them. We play games and take trips to the park and after lunch I start working and will work in to the evening ho urs. i do most of my work though around 3am when i wake up. and i get a bit of time to take care of things while its quiet. but once the girls are awake, i try to balance my time between them and any work related issues that need immediate attention. I do not mind the distractions. I would much rather be home than out working away from home. it takes up so much time.

I work at home as well--I'm a writer. I am very disciplined about it. I look at it as a job. That doesn't mean I don't take time for other things. I take breaks and of course I throw in a load of wash or take stuff out of the dryer and fold it. I run errands too but I try and keep focused as far as my work. Gotta meet those deadlines!

I envy all of you that work at home. I have been searching and then researching various companies forever! I can't seem to find a legitimate work at home job. Can any of you guide me here? I live in Iowa where telecommuting isn't really an option yet.

I would appreciate any advice, leads or guidance!! Thanks!!

Julie

Enjoy your Friday!!! smiley

Wendy:

I work at home and have been doing so for about 15 years -- since my oldest was born. I'm a single mom, so I have to work to make ends meet. I found early on that discipline is key. When my children were small I worked around them -- writing at night after they were in bed, or between feedings or when they napped.

Now, I generally work a normal workday schedule. My boys are 12 and 14 now. But, I just left a post this morning about how messy my house is. And I really want to spend the morning putting it in order. But, work must come first. And so I will have to leave that to the weekend. (I've worked on weekends too, when I've been lucky enough to be that busy.)

What kinds of work do you do at home?

Do you work for a company or run your own business?
Are you doing freelance work, selling things on eBay?

I'm a freelance writer. I find the biggest challenge is accepting this is a job, and hoarding off tons of other obligations, just because I'm at home. I find people think because I work out of the house my deadlines are less serious. And I do the same thing to myself. For example, if my teen daughter is home, I'll feel badly if she's moping around with nothing to do. I'll take her to the mall instead of forcing myself to finish my writing work...unless the deadline is very tight. It's tough being torn all the time.

I too work online but just for few hours during kids nap time. During the rest of the day its real tough if we plan for a serious job and self discipline is very much required besides patience and concentration.

I work as a writer, at home. And I'm a mom. I could use some advice. My dad died recently, and my mother lives nearby. Before my dad passed away, I'd start working when my kids got on the school bus. But now my mom calls every morning. Though she has a caretaker most days, she's also lonely. It's hard for me to say no to her, tell her I'm busy with so many other things, and I can't drop everything and spend time with her. Any advice? How can I manage to see my mom, and do my writing while my kids are in school?

I'm a consultant/independant representative for several companies, and I'm also an online secret shopper. I used to sell on Ebay too, but my hard drive crashed and the temporary one I havenow doesn't have the space for me to install my picture editing software. Anyone who would like to know what companies I'm with can find them on my website at http://dragonflywhispers.com. The link for the secret shopper site is http://www.secretshopperwork.com/r/5134. I'm doing pretty good there so far, I've made $151.95 in the last two weeks, which is really going to help out with Christmas this year.

Yes, I also work at home and find that there is not enough time in the day. Do I clean up the mess in the kitchen or get some work done? I sell stuff online and it is not easy work. Takes loads of time but I need the money. It is work that I enjoy. Originally I was able to get up early and be at my desk by 8 am and work through the day with an hour lunch (read TV) break at 1 pm. Now when I get up I am so depressed with the cleanup that needs to be done that I just drink coffee until I finally get to work in the late morning. If I do my housekeeping I feel guilty that I am not working and if I am working on my business I think that I should clean up before anyone gets home and I begin dinner. Basically I have just gotten very unorganized. I need to get back on track. I am getting pretty disgusted with myself. I do hope all the rest of you are doing better than this. Any suggestions, comments are very welcome. Thanks for listening. If you would like to see what I do you are very welcome to visit me at
