July 4th celebrations can turn kids into Republicans
A new study from Harvard University has found that July 4th celebrations can actually turn kids into Republicans.
Andreas Madestam and David Yanagizawa-Drott, the study’s lead authors, noted that the parades and floats and other displays of patriotism can create children who lean right politically as adults.
“Taken together, the results indicate that Fourth of July celebrations in the United States shape the nation’s political landscape by forming beliefs and increasing participation, primarily in favor of the Republican party,” found the study according to the L.A. Times.
Statistics from the study indicate that children who had been to one July 4th celebration before they were 18 were 4 percent more likely to vote Republican before they turned 40.
“The political right has been more successful in appropriating American patriotism and its symbols during the 20th century,” observed Madestam and Yanagizawa-Drott in Time Magazine.
