New breast-feeding doll
A new type of doll called Breast Milk Baby is about to hit American stores. Made by Berjuan Toys, a Spanish toy manufacturer, the toy will be accompanied by a halter top with two flowers to symbolize breasts. According to The New York Times, when this doll’s mouth is brought near the flowers it makes a sucking sound and, afterwards, it cries until burped.
The doll is causing controversies because some mothers believe that it is teaching their daughters to breast-feed when they become mothers. However, scientists say that the type of dolls that little girls play with has minimal impact on the way they will raise their future children. In the U.S., the percentage of mothers who breast-feed at three and six months is very low and is likely the reason for the controversy.
According to CNN, the dolls come in six different combinations of race and gender. “Some critics say that the doll [is] over-sexualizing young girls or forcing girls to grow up too quickly, but the company and those in support of the doll say that it teaches young girls natural motherhood,” say the makers of the toy.
