What to do when your child wakes you up with flushed cheeks and a warm forehead? In most cases, mothers tend to panic when they find out that their kids are down with a fever. Your child officially has a fever when the thermometer reads 100.4°F. and above, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
However, sometimes it’s necessary to immediately seek help from your pediatrician, and this necessity varies by age. Call if your child is:
Under 2 months old with a temperature of 100.4°F;
3 to 6 months old with a temperature of 101°F;
Over 6 months old with a temperature of 103°F.

... remember that a fever doesn’t mean illness. It's usually just a sign that your child's immune system is fighting off a bacterial or viral infection, says Michael Devon, MD, a pediatrician situated near Philadelphia. Causes of a fever, like a cold or flu, are usually easily treatable at home.
How your child acts is a good indicator of how sick he/she is. "If your child is lethargic, irritable, has a sore throat, ear or stomach pain, or pain when she urinates, call your doctor," says Dr. Devon. If you can’t find any obvious sources of infection, call your doctor. And immediately seek help if your child is under 3 months old, since infants are more susceptible to certain types of infections, so it’s important that your doctor rules out any serious illnesses.

We now know that glass thermometers contain harmful mercury that can be responsible for causing learning disabilities as the toxins affect the brain, spinal cord, liver, and kidneys. Break it and you risk exposing your family to the mercury’s vapors. If you still have one, take it to your pediatrician or a local hazardous waste facility for save disposal.
According to Hurt, babies will have more accurate readings with a digital rectal thermometer; switch to an oral one when he/she turns three years old. Ear thermometers require tricky placement in the ear canal for accurate results, and earwax can actually throw off the reading. Underarm and pacifier varieties are also less reliable.
“To take a rectal temp, first dab petroleum jelly on the bulb of the thermometer. Place your baby belly-down on your lap or on a bed or changing table, then gently insert the bulb 1/2 to 1 inch into your child's rectum. Loosely hold the thermometer in place with two fingers until it beeps. To get an accurate reading using an oral thermometer, wait at least 15 minutes after your child has had anything hot or cold to eat or drink before you take his temperature,” says Hurt.

Meds like acetaminophen and ibuprofen are fever-reducing, meaning they will help your child be more comfortable and they will not, in fact, “break” the fever. According to Hurt, most illness-causing germs thrive at normal body temperature, which is 98.6°F. When the body detects an infection, it raises the temperature in order to ward off these germs. Thus, “a [f]ever is actually a good thing, since it helps the body fight infection.”
"At most, the meds will bring a fever down a degree or two -- just enough to make your child feel better," says Ari Brown, MD, a Parents advisor and author of Baby 411. So don’t expect immediate complete recovery.
Make sure you choose the right meds for your kids. Babies under 6 months should take acetaminophen; ibuprofen isn’t approved for kids that young since its safety is not yet established, Hurt says. According to a research review in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, ibuprofen works better for older kids, but choose acetaminophen if your child has a sensitive stomach.
Read labels carefully so you avoid overmedicating your kids. Some experts rightly warn that mixing meds is often confusing. For example, if you plan to give your child a cold medicine along with a fever-reducing one, be sure that it doesn’t contain any additional acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Otherwise, Dr. Devon says, you could be giving your child a double dose. Also, follow instructions to the letter and never eyeball the dosage. A dropper that comes with one medicine might not work for another. "Choose the amount that matches your child's current weight, and use the dropper that came in the package," says Dr. Brown.

My daughter, now almost 25, was born with a birth defect in her kidney. However we didn't know that until she was almost 4. From the time she was about 3 months old until she was about 3, she would run very high temps. I am talking around 104 to 105. I would panic and run her to the doctor. Finally her doctor, whom I just adored, told me to not panic because the fact of life was that Tiffany ran very high temps regardless. Then came the baldders infections again and again. Finally they put it together that there was a problem with the kidneys. She ended up having major surgery right after her 4th bday. My daughter was so tiny that they had to use magnifying glasses to see her tubes because they were too small. She still is tiny. All of about 5 ft and maybe 100 lbs soaking wet. Anyways, after the surgery the fevers went away also. It's a very scary thing. |
